Timber frame house in Kentucky

A Home for the Starrs

This was a Harvest-Design-Build project to savor, for a family determined to create an inspiring home with personal significance on their southwest Pennsylvania farm.

Using trees from their own woodlot was important to John and Margi.  And indeed we found and harvested some jewels—cherry and walnut trees having simple, curving shapes, but also complex graining and rich colors.

It is this combination of both the simple and the complex, the symmetric and the asymmetric, the perfect along with the imperfect, which makes, I believe, for compelling structures—ones which continue to reveal their beauty over time.

The scope of our work consisted of a fully timber framed great room, along with timber frame elements (used in coordination with conventional light framing) in the kitchen and dining areas.  We also designed and built the entry porch timber frame.  There are future designs for a timber frame porch to shelter an outdoor dining area.
